The below is attributable to Spokesperson Matthew Miller:
Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo virtually today. The Secretary expressed support for Guatemala’s peaceful political transition to President-elect Arévalo. He also expressed solidarity with the Guatemalan people as they face continued efforts to impede a democratic transfer of power.
The Secretary conveyed that he looks forward to working with the President-elect on issues of shared interest – including continued implementation of the Root Causes Strategy to address irregular migration – and that the United States will continue to use all available tools against those who act to undermine democracy and the rule of law in Guatemala. The Secretary and President-elect Arévalo affirmed their mutual interest in a prosperous, stable, and democratic Western Hemisphere.
